Benign Prostate Hypertrophy
It is histological disorder characterized by the enlargement of prostate. If it grows significantly it can interfere the normal flow of urine. It involves hyperplasia, i.e. increase in the number of cells. Prostate enlargement occurs in almost all men as they grow old. It’s not a cancer and does not raise your chances of cancer. Though scientists do not know all the functions of prostate gland, it carries sperms during sexual climax.
Causes :
Exact cause of prostate enlargement is unknown. Nothing can be said with surety, but most common observations are pointing towards following causes.
1- Hormones like testosterone and androgens.
2- As men age, the amount of testosterone decreases and estrogen increases. Study has shown certain link between this and the prostate condition.
Many men do not want to talk about it as it is related with male reproduction system. But this must be treated as it can be very painful and lead to extremely serious condition.
Symptoms :
Many symptoms are related to the obstruction to the urethra.
1. Dribbling at the end of urinating
2. Inability to urinate (urinary retention)
3. Incomplete emptying of your bladder
4. Incontinence
5. Needing to urinate two or more times per night
6. Pain with urination or bloody urine (these may indicate infection)
7. Slowed or delayed start of the urinary stream
8. Straining to urinate
9. Strong and sudden urge to urinate
10. Weak urine stream
Diagnosis :
1. Rectal examination is performed to mark enlarged prostate.
2. Blood test to rule out prostatic malignancy.
3. Ultrasound for testicles, kidney.
4. Cystoscopy.
5. Urinalysis.
6. Flow rate to determine the initial assessment
