Diabetes Diseases

Diabetes or diabetes mellitus is known to be a metabolic disease wherein an individual has high blood sugar. This is either because the pancreas does not produce adequate insulin or because the cells don’t respond to the insulin that’s produced. In other words, diabetes is a metabolic disorder wherein the insulin, a hormone that’s required for converting starches, sugar and other food into energy, is not produced or used properly by the human body. Diabetes mellitus is characterized by continuous high levels of blood glucose. Human body needs to maintain the level of blood glucose at a very narrow range, which is mainly done by glucagon and insulin. The glucagon functions in such a way that it leads the liver to release glucose from its cells into the blood, for producing energy and insulin helps utilization of sugar in the body.

Diabetes diseases can be divided mainly into 3 types :

Type 1 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes

Gestational diabetes

What Causes Diabetes?

Hereditary : Many medical experts strongly believe that as a result of some genes that pass from one generation to another, an individual can inherit diabetes. The chances of getting this disease depend upon the closeness of blood relationship. For instance, if mother has diabetes, then the risk for the child is about 2 to 3%, if father is diabetic then the risk is more than the previous one and if both the parents have diabetes, the child is exposed to a greater risk for the disease.

Improper Diet : A diet plays an important role in healthy living and getting a good physique; similarly a poor or improper nutrition, low protein and fiber intake and high intake of refined products are the expected reasons for developing diabetes.

Age : Increased age is also an important factor for the development of this condition. The disease can occur at any age and at any given stage, however 80% of cases occur after the age of 50.

Sedentary Lifestyle : People who lead a sedentary lifestyle are the ones more prone to diabetes when compared to those who exercise thrice a week, are at low risk of falling prey to the condition.

Obesity and Distribution of Fat : When an individual is overweight or obese, it means the insulin resistance is more, i.e. the body fat is more than 30%, BMI more than 25, waist grith 35 inches in women or 40 inches in males.

Drug : Drugs such as clozapine, olanzapine, risperidone, quetiapine and ziprasidone are known to induce this lethal disease.

Gender : Diabetes is usually seen in elderly individuals, mainly males but strongly in women and those females with multiple pregnancy or those who suffer from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

Hypertension : Several studies have shown that there is a direct relation between high systolic pressure and diabetes.

Stress: Many believe that either an emotional disturbance or a physical injury is most often blamed as the initial cause of the disease. Diabetes can develop due to any disturbance in Cortiosteroid or ACTH therapy.

Lipoproteins and Serium Lipids : Cholesterol and high triglyceride level in the blood is related to high blood sugars, in some cases, many experts also say that risk is involved even with low HDL levels in circulating blood.

Symptoms of Diabetes

Signs and symptoms are more likely to be the same in both types of diabetes due to the high amount of blood sugar, either due to less or no production of insulin or insulin resistance. However, inadequacy of glucose in the cells can be identified through certain signs and symptoms. The symptoms can be relieved quickly once diabetes gets treated and it also lessens the chances of developing serious health problems.

Type 1 Diabetes :

In this type, the pancreas in the body stops producing insulin due to autoimmune response or maybe due to viral attack on pancreas. Due to the absence of insulin, the body cells are deprived of the required glucose to produce ATP (Adenosin Triphosphate) which leads to the primary symptom in the form of vomiting and nausea. The body in the later stage starts to break down the fat and muscle tissue for producing energy, thus, resulting into quick weight loss. In advanced stages, one can also witness coma and death.

Type 2 Diabetes :

Increase in Fatigue: Reserve fat of the body is metabolized to gain energy as the cell is incapable to metabolize glucose. When fat is broken down in the body, it uses more energy as compared to glucose, thus the body goes in negative calorie effect, which results in fatigue.

Fluctuation of weight: Weigh loss can occur due to factors such as loss of water, glucosuria, metabolism of body fat and protein. Also, few cases might show a gain in the weight due to increased appetite.

Infections: Whenever there is fluctuation in blood sugar (due to containment of immune system), due to frequent skin infections such as fungal or bacterial or UTI (urinary tract infection), the body gives few signals which state the symptoms.

Poor Healing of Wound: The booming of WBC (white blood cells) which are responsible for the body immune system is restricted by the high blood sugar. The healing of wound doesn’t happen properly when these cells don’t function accordingly. Also, long standing diabetes results into the thickening of blood vessels which affect proper blood circulation in different parts of the body.

Homeopathic Approach for Diabetes
