ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorder of children. This disorder affects as many as 10% of children around the world as well as large number of adults. This neurological disorder includes difficulty paying attention, problems focusing on and completing tasks, self control issues, restlessness, behaving impulsively, hyperactivity and becoming bored easily with daily tasks. This disorder is treated medically with stimulant drugs, oral antihypertensives and antidepressants. While these medications can be useful at times, if carefully monitored, side effects are likely to happen, and majority of these drugs should not be given to children under the age of 6.

The reasons for not giving drugs to small children include the risk of toxicity or lack of dosage information due to insufficient testing for unpleasant drug reactions in this age. 20% of children affected by ADHD do not respond to the first stimulant drug or have a negative reaction to it.

Causes for ADHD
The exact causes of ADHD in childhood are still unknown and even the experts are not able to find out. However, most opine that the condition is a neurobiological disorder that affects many areas of the brain, including those responsible for behavior, working memory and executive functions. Researchers also say that childhood ADHD is a highly genetic disease. As the symptoms of the disease manifest differently in different children, it can be quite tricky to identify and diagnose.

Symptoms
Several individuals experience symptoms of ADHD at different times and if ADHD is the root of your problems then you might even wonder when looking out anxiously for your keys or forgetting vital information. However, ADHD symptoms aren't episodic or fleeting. The symptoms are extreme, pervasive and long term. Having said that, the triad of symptoms of impulsivity, inattention and hyperactivity characterizes ADHD.

Homeopathy for ADHD
Doctors using homeopathy for ADHD have reported good results, however, objective evidence has been lacking. But another study conducted over some children with ADHD showed that homeopathy can be effective in treating the disorder. In a study published in some journal, children afflicted with ADHD were given either a homeopathic treatment or some other medicine for 10 days. Those who received homeopathic showed considerably less ADHD behavior than those who were given the other medicine.

When assessed later, 57% of the children showing improvement with homeopathy had continued to improve, even though they had discontinued the homeopathic medicines. The researchers thus concluded that homeopathy is quite beneficial for children and adults suffering from ADHD. For more information on the disorder, you can log onto www.drnikam.com
